(Washington, DC) ‘ October 11, 2007 ‘ The Open
Jumper riders competed in their first classes tonight at
the 49th Washington International Horse Show, a 501 (c)(3)
charitable organization benefiting local and national
charities.
McLain Ward was the ‘high roller’ during the $20,000
Gambler’s Choice open jumper class, with a score of
1,300. During the class, Mclain accumulated the highest
amount of points, 1,100, during the :50 second round. He
then decided to take a risk and jump the 200 point ‘Joker
Fence,’ cleanly clearing the tallest vertical plank of the
course.
Tonight was also the premier night for Barrel Racing and
Terrier Races, sponsored by The Davis Family. Always a crowd favorite, the terriers tore down the track as the crowd chose their favorites and cheered them on. The Barrel Racers also excited the crowd during their competitive runs, showing the spectators that western riders love to compete as well.
During the day portion of the competition, Whitney Weeks,
riding both Subliem and Piola, placed first and second,
respectively, in the Amateur Owner Jumper class. Lara
Gay, on Countdown 23, finished third. The Amateur Owner
Division, sponsored by Dennis and Mary K Shaughnessy, will award the Championship tomorrow following the Ambassador’s Cup.
The Open Jumper riders competed in the Gerald R. Ford
President’s Cup Grand Prix qualifying class, sponsored by Monarch International, during the afternoon portion of the show. Lauren Hough took first place on Casadora with a time of 59.44 second. Following the winner was Danielle Torano, riding Vancouver D’Auvrey, in second place with a time of65.85 second and Southern Pride, ridden by Karen Cudmore, in third place with a time of 67.02 seconds.
