(Washington, DC) ‘ October 13, 2007 ‘ The Washington International Horse Show, a 501 (c)(3) charitable
organization benefiting local and regional non profit
organizations, hosted its inaugural Charity Cup Classic
this evening, sponsored by Hidden Trail Farm, LLC. Six local organizations, represented by teams of two Open Jumper riders each, competed to win an overall $30,000 for their organizations. STEEED, Soaring Towards Educational Enrichment via Equine Discovery, Inc., represented by Open Jumper riders Laura Bowery and Addison Phillips, was the winning organization, taking home the coveted top $10,000 prize. STEEED will use the money to help youth and their families experience educational and recreational opportunities through equestrian, environmental and ecological programming.
Following the Charity Cup Classic, three-time Grammy
nominee artist, Jewel took the stage, entertaining
spectators of all ages. Jewel invited fans down onto the
arena floor, making the Verizon Center a more intimate
venue for everyone. During her 45 minute set, Jewel
performed such hits as ‘Intuition,’ ‘Stand,’ ‘Hands,’
and ‘Who Will Save My Soul,’ among others.
Before his ride in the Puissance, McLain Ward commented on
Jewel’s performance, saying, ‘To have a renowned
entertainment celebrity such as Jewel at any equestrian
event is a highlight and it’s obvious that the WIHS
understands how to bring crowds to an equestrian
event.’
Ward then proceeded to clinch the Puissance, sponsored by The Monica and Herman Greenberg Foundation and AEGON, title for the second year in a row, beating out his three competitors. Ward and Karen Cudmore, riding Conejo, completed three clean jump-off rounds, eliminating both Margie Engle on Hidden Creeks Quervo Gold and Michael Morrissey on Crabamboli. During the fourth jump off round, Ward rode first, clearing the first fence and then the 6′ 8 ”, seemingly solid, brick wall. Cudmore cleared the first
fence but Conejo brushed the second obstacle, resulting in
four faults and second place.
